Nursing in General Practice

The North West Slopes Division of General Practice is committed to enhancing patient care through a team approach. Practice Nurses are a core part of the practice team playing a vital role in health promotion, maintenance of health and the prevention of illnesses. Nurses are highly skilled and knowledgeable health professionals who work collaboratively with the General Practitioner and other members of the practice team to provide safe and quality care.

The roles of Nurses in General Practice are varied - from immunisations, management of chronic disease conditions such as diabetes and asthma, women’s health, liaising with Allied Health Providers and additional support for the General Practitioner. Recognised benefits nurses can bring to General Practice include:

  • Increased job satisfaction for the general practitioner
  • Reduction in patient waiting times
  • Increased range of services offered at the practice
  • Improved management of patients with chronic disease
  • Improved quality of care provided to patients leading to increased patient satisfaction

Goals

  1. Assist General Practitioners in the recruitment of Practice Nurses
  2. Assist with the induction and orientation for new Nurses
  3. Provide assistance to General Practices on maximising utilisation of Practice Nurses
  4. Professional development for Practices Nurses
  5. Promote peer support/mentoring through Practice Nurse educational workshops

Education

The Division is an Endorsed and Accredited Provider with the Royal College of Nursing. Education sessions are regularly provided to update Practice Nurses on developments and changes affecting general practice. These sessions are held at the Division and are generally on a Tuesday evening between 6.30pm-9.30pm. Please see the ‘Education and Events Calendar’ for Practice Nurses on this site.

Practice Visits

The Division provides support and education to General Practices that focuses on the Practice Nurse role. Some of the topics covered during a practice visit may include:

  1. Assistance in recruiting a Practice Nurse
  2. Induction and orientation for new Nurses
  3. Assist with maximizing utilisation of the Practice Nurses’ skills
  4. Cold Chain Management
  5. Immunisation
  6. Chronic Disease Management
  7. Patient recall/reminder systems
  8. Accreditation
